Dr Piyush Verma currently works as Senior Governance Advisor – Energy at the United Nations Development Programme, New York, USA where he leads the global policy and programme support on the energy governance for over 170 countries.

He is an energy and climate policy expert and has worked extensively at the intersection of technology, economy, society, and governance. He has worked on national energy and climate policies closely working with governments in India, New Zealand, Vanuatu, Ireland, and USA before joining the UNDP in July 2022.

He was selected as a Global Future Energy Leader by the World Energy Council London in 2018 and between 2018-2021 he led and contributed to a variety of international projects at the Council. Dr. Verma also chaired the Joint Task Force on Digitalization in Energy at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe in Geneva from 2021-2022. He was instrumental in establishing and operationalizing this task force that brings a multidisciplinary expertise to leverage the potential of digital technologies to help accelerate the energy transition process and achieve net zero.

He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from India and has a PhD in Energy Technology and Policy from The University of Auckland, New Zealand. He has also completed a Master in Public Administration program as a prestigious Edward S Mason Fellow from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, USA.
